Project Ideas

The ideal projects we are looking to fund and support are accomplishable (given constraints of busy students schedules), apply data analysis or engineering solutions, and make a social impact. A typical project might take data driven approaches to analyze or expose some current issue at Berkeley through surveys or observation. Examples of projects in this area are:

  • social engagement in single gender vs. coed living situations
  • studying how students backgrounds affects happiness
  • Racism/Demography Trends in Online Dating
  • Percent of individuals in relationships at different times in college career
  • Study habits vs. grades and test scores
  • Other projects could involve building devices or developing software using technologies available on campus like 3-D printers, laser cutters, machine shops or campus industry partnerships. Examples of projects in this area are:

  • A bluetooth activated motorized door handle for preventing lockouts
  • Chat service for stressed / suicidal students
  • Aerial campus photography with drones
  • Class Webcast crowd-sourcing technologies
  • Another project area relates to biology and chemistry research. These will be more closely involved with professors and ideally tangential to ongoing projects on campus. They may involve modeling and analysis work with specific connections to research labs. For those interested in these projects, please attend the information sessions so we can work with you on the details.
